The King William Historic District
This historic area is located in downtown San Antonio and well-known for its beautiful historic homes.
During the decades following the Civil War, many prominent business owners in San Antonio built homes in this area. The King William District became the heart of the city’s thriving German community.
Many of the homes still stand today, the earliest dating back to the 1850s. The structures range in style from very basic one-story buildings to Victorian-style mansions. These homes reflect the works of some of the finest architects in San Antonio’s history.
Many of the homes are private, but some are open to the public for tours, and others are open as bed and
breakfasts or small restaurants.
In order to view the houses, one can drive or park and walk through the area, which is small enough to view in a couple of hours when experienced on foot. To locate the area, go to King William Street in downtown San Antonio and tour the surrounding area, which is bounded by Barbe Street on the south and the San Antonio River on the west.
