La Villita

La Villita was first the site of a Coahuiltecan Indian village, which was probably erected in the early 1700s. The area was opened to, and gradually, many came to call the area home. Although the area is specifically related to Mexican heritage, those of German, Swiss, French and Indian heritage contributed to the area’s rich culture.

In 1939, La Villita was restored by the city, and it is still owned and run by the city of San Antonio, which operates it as a craft and recreational center.

During the city-wide celebration of Fiesta, held every spring, La Villita becomes home to Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA), which draws thousands of visitors for evenings full of food, music and celebration of San Antonio’s rich historical culture.
