Mission Concepción is the oldest unrestored Catholic Church in the United States. It is still used today as a parish church, and is thought by many to be the best-preserved mission in San Antonio.
Considered one of the most beautiful Texas missions, Mission Concepción is built in the shape of a cross and still has two frescoes from the1700s, including a painting of the crucifixion in the baptistery and another called the “Eye of God,” located in the library. The Eye of God was a socially progressive image for the 1700s because it portrays God as a mestizo.
Many say Mission Concepción has the best acoustics of all the San Antonio Missions, which visitors can experience during weekly Catholic church services held at Concepción.
