Mission San Francisco de la Espada

Although much of Mission Espada has fallen to ruins, visitors can still see the its quaint chapel, where bilingual church services are still held every week.

The first mission built in Texas, Mission San Francisco de la Espada originated in 1690 and was transferred to the San Antonio area in the 1731. Mission Espada was an agriculturally based mission with a simple design very similar to its sister mission, Mission San Juan.

The original church of Mission Espada has fallen to ruins throughout the years, but visitors can still see the facade of the original church. Still standing on the property is a narrow chapel with wooden benches where bilingual services are held.

Mission Espada’s best known feature is its acequia (irrigation system) which is still functioning today, carrying water to the mission and surrounding farmlands.
