Mission San Jose
The largest mission in San Antonio, Mission San Jose is famous for its elaborate architecture, intricate sculptures and carved wooden doors.
Known as the “Queen of the Missions,” Mission San Jose was the second mission built on the San Antonio River. Although it was originally built in 1720, the mission was moved two times before it was finished at its current location in 1780.
During its most successful time, the mission housed 300 Indians who farmed, ranched and built and cared for many of the buildings that still exist today. Mission San Jose became known as a model mission, mainly because of its physical beauty, well-run operations and the strength of its buildings and walls.
Mission San Jose is the largest and among the most ornately decorated missions in San Antonio. One of its most famous features is the Rose Window (or Rosa’s Window), which is carved in the limestone on the south side of the structure. The buildings are also renowned for their elaborate architecture, intricate sculptures and carved wooden doors.
The mission is open to visitors every day, and every Sunday, Mission San Jose fills with music as visitors and regular parishioners take part in a Mariachi Mass. Visitors can also visit the granary, grape arbor and the ruins of the
convento.
