Mission San Juan Capistrano

Often described as “pastoral,” Mission San Juan is located in peaceful and beautiful isolated area.

Mission San Juan is a much more simple structure than the other missions. Its original construction included a small, flat-roofed chapel, granary and friary. Later, construction began on what was to be a larger and more elaborate church, but as the population decreased, the project was abandoned.

Often described as “pastoral,” Mission San Juan was much more isolated than other missions, causing it to fall prey to more Indian attacks than Missions San Jose and Concepcion, which were in populous areas. Because of its isolation, the mission was also more self-sufficient than the others, producing enough food, clothing and iron tools to help sustain itself and other missions in Texas and beyond.

Regular church services are still held in Mission San Juan Capistrano, which is located at 9101 Graf near downtown San Antonio.
